After graduating from medical school, Merryman returned to Portland, where he was hired by the Portland Asiatic Steamship Company. When he took the job, the family moved to Hillsboro, Oregon, and his father was a customs collector in Astoria for several years. In 1908, Merryman decided to give up his seat in the House of Representatives and run for the Senate of the 17th District, representing Crook and Klamath Lake counties. After serving six years in the state government, he decided to run for a seat in the Oregon House of Representatives again, but in 1912 he decided to return to his medical practice in Klimath Falls. He lived in what he called the "house of the horse and the pram," but it was a relatively undeveloped area and he made a lot of money for it. In 1913, after being elected to the Oregon State Legislature for a second term, Merryman did not run for a third term.
He still maintains a thriving practice in Klimath Falls and also provides facial trauma care at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. He performs operations at his modern technology office, which was established in 2016, as well as other medical facilities at the hospital.

A study by scientists studying social geography at Dartmouth College found that 55 percent of doctors have well-educated spouses looking for well-paying jobs, and 10 percent are single.
Both schools agree that more residency programs are needed overall, and that there are just over 100 in rural East Washington, according to the Washington Department of Health.
